The GSMA, working closely with the three major Canadian operators - BellMobility, Rogers Communications and Telus, has launched its GSMA OneAPI Gateway.The Gateway offers application developers a simple way to connect to and use astandard set of APIs (application programming interfaces) available fromCanadian network.This platform allows applications to operate regardless of which mobilenetwork or device the mobile subscriber is using, reducing time to market andintegration costs. The Gateway will be operated by Transaction Network Services(TNSI) on behalf of the GSMA."Previously, application developers were required to implement manydifferent interfaces to MNOs from their application to launch cross-networkservices, and now with the GSMA OneAPI Gateway, MNOs and developers benefit fromreduced application development and integration time," said Alex Sinclair,Chief Technology Officer, GSMA. "By using the GSMA OneAPI Gateway,developers have a larger addressable market, can provide an enhanced customerexperience and produce new revenue opportunities for mobile operators anddevelopers alike."APIs currently supported by the GSMA OneAPI gateway include Carrier BillingPayment APIs (where a variable price can be charged to the consumer), SMS, andLocation, with further OneAPI capabilities such as MMS, Data Connection Profileand call control which may be added later.The formal production launch of the GSMA OneAPI Gateway follows a successfulcommercial pilot which was launched in February 2010 in Canada and aimed tolower the technical and commercial barriers to entry.

Google has announced that it will set aside a batch of patents that it willin future only sue over if it is itself first sued. The company pitched thelaunch of the Open Patent Non-Assertion (OPN) Pledge as a way of trying to calmdown the tit-for-tat patent wars affecting the technology industry.However, the company has only pledged 10 patents -- out of a total arsenalthat is thought to exceed 17,000 patents.The company said that it was starting with 10 patents relating to MapReduce,a computing model for processing large data sets first developed at Google, butplans to expand the set of Google's patents covered by the pledge to othertechnologies.The patent commentator, Florian Mueller also noted that the difficultywith patent pledges of this sort is not which patents are included, but whichare left out.Overall, even much larger open-source patent pledges by other tech firms havehad a negligible effect on stemming the surge of lawsuits.Other tech firms that have previously committed patents to open-sourceagreements include IBM with 500 patents and Sun with around 1,600 patents.On the web: FlorianMueller
